  • 12/21/10--13:00: Personality Poker with Stephen Shapiro - Dec 21,2010 (chan 2972828)
  • Janet Powers, Diva Toolbox, will be taking with Stephen Shapiro, about "Personality Poker, Why the Person You Like Least May Be the Person You Need the Most". Look at any group who works effortlessly together. Odds are the individuals share a lot in common. They might have similar backgrounds, expertise, interests, or personalities. Contrary to conventional wisdom, opposites do NOT attract. We find it easier to work with people who are like us. As a result, teams that lack diversity are the norm. Why is this a problem? Research shows that in situations involving “high difficulty” tasks, heterogeneous groups consistently perform best. Innovation is, by its very nature, fraught with uncertainty and complexity. Although homogeneous teams may work more harmoniously, it is the uniformity of thinking that limits breakthrough ideas and reduces innovation. Ensuring a range of innovation styles within any team is critical to maximizing performance. Unfortunately, diverse teams, left to their own devices, are rarely efficient. Personality Poker was created to shows organizations how to: 1. “Play to your strong suit.” Ensuring that you and everyone on your team understands how they contribute to and detract from the innovation process. 2. “Play with a full deck.” Embrace a wide range of innovation styles. Instead of hiring on competency and chemistry, hire for a diversity of innovation styles. 3. “Deal out the work.” Divide and conquer. You can’t have everyone in your organization do everything. Instead, get them to divvy up the work based on which style is most effective at a given task. Innovation is the life-blood of an organization and people are at the heart of it. Personality Poker engages individuals in a way that ensures high performance teamwork and innovation within any organization.
